I get sentimental about dog collars. There’s something about a collar that has lasted the life of the dog and tells the story of your journey together. There is a peak in San Diego County that has a tall wooden post at the top, where people hang their deceased dog’s collars and it grabs my heart every time I lay eyes on it. Hearing the soft clinking of the worn tags in the wind, pausing to take a moment for those that have gone on the ultimate journey.

Want to know something else I notice? How worn and stinky and deteriorated those flat nylon collars are. Now, I know there is a purpose for all types of collars and I’ve had AMAZING life from biothane collars. They have been in salt water and fresh water and dirt for years and don’t show the slightest wear.

However, seeing as how this is a leather page, let’s talk leather dog collars. I love the look of a leather collar, but what I despise is a cheap leather collar that, once wet or used for a short amount of time, curls, stretches, or starts to fall apart. And so, I set out to see if I could find the right leather to make a collar that was tough and held up to our lifestyle, but also looked simple, clean and classic.

Our dog collars and leashes are made out of 10 oz Hermann Oak Harness Leather. We have tested this leather in pretty rugged and harsh conditions. It has been fully submerged in lakes and rivers, drug through the brush in search of fur and feather, flying down single track dusty mountain trails and scrambling up rocky peaks of the Sierra. It has patina that is deep and rich and tells a story of our adventures, and yet, though all its tests, is still as tough and durable as the day it was constructed.
